If you're a self-employed Californian or small business owner in San Diego, Los Angeles, or Imperial County, it's critical to understand how your income affects your health insurance options through Covered California.
Covered California provides financial assistance determined by your household size and income, following the Federal Poverty Level (FPL) guidelines. This assistance includes premium tax credits and cost-sharing reductions, significantly lowering your expenses for monthly premiums and medical appointments.
What Are the 2026 Income Limits for Covered California?
The income limits change each year. For 2026, a single person earning up to $62,600/year or a family of four earning up to $128,600/year may qualify for financial help. You can view the full 2026 Covered California income table below in this blog.

Beware of the “Subsidy Cliff” at 400% FPL
If your household income goes over 400% of the Federal Poverty Level, you may lose access to premium tax credits. This is known as the income cliff.
For example: A 50 year old couple living in San Diego County.
A household of 2 earning $84,550 might qualify for $918.89 of monthly subsidy!

But if their income increases just a bit — over $84,600 — they could lose subsidies entirely. Yes they get a $2 subsidy for a $50 change in yearly income!

This cliff can lead to thousands of dollars in premium increases overnight. If you're projecting a strong year in business, it's important to plan ahead and review your options now.
