When can I sign up for a 2026 Covered California plan?
Open Enrollment for 2026 Covered California plans runs from November 1, 2025 through January 31, 2026.
Outside that window, you can still enroll if you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period
(due to life events like job loss, moving, getting married, etc.).

Why do I need to buy insurance in 2026?
Health insurance protects you from the high cost of medical care. Even a single emergency room visit or surgery can cost thousands of dollars. With insurance, you get access to doctors, preventive care, and prescriptions at a fraction of the cost. It also provides peace of mind knowing you’re covered if the unexpected happens. In addition, California law requires most residents to have health coverage — if you don’t, you may face a tax penalty of $900 per adult and $450 per child, or 2.5% of your income, whichever is greater. Many people qualify for financial help through Covered California to reduce monthly premiums and avoid this penalty.
