Medi-Cal
In California, Medi-Cal applications are handled by each county’s social services office. Below, you’ll find contact details and helpful resources for your county to learn more about eligibility, benefits, and enrollment support.

What is Medi-cal?
Medi-Cal is California’s free or low-cost health coverage program for individuals and families with limited income. It is funded by both the state and federal government and provides access to doctors, hospitals, prescription drugs, preventive care, and other essential health services.
When to apply?
Medi-Cal has no set enrollment period—you can apply at any time during the year if you meet the requirements.
How to qualify?
To qualify for Medi-Cal, you generally need to meet the following:
-
Residency: Must be a California resident.
-
Income: Household income must fall within state-set limits (varies by family size).
-
Citizenship/Immigration Status: U.S. citizens, lawful permanent residents, and some other qualified immigrants may be eligible.
-
Special Categories: Children, pregnant women, seniors (65+), and people with certain disabilities may qualify at higher income levels.
-
Assets: For most people, there is no longer an asset test, but some programs for seniors and those needing long-term care still consider resources.
How to apply?
You can apply for Medi-Cal at any time. Applications are submitted either through BenefitsCal.com or by visiting your local County Health and Human Services office. Each county manages its own applications, so your local office can provide direct support and resources.
